Leading design teams through complicated product problems.

The Economist • Financial Times The Telegraph • The Times

I'm a Product Design Manager at The Economist, with a background spanning product design, editorial experiences, subscriptions and engagement.

I work closely with Product and Engineering to shape direction, help designers do their best work, and stay close enough to the detail to step in when needed. This website was planned using AI tools and crafted by hand. Best viewed on desktop, but optimised for mobile.

01 Giving subscription marketing more confidence

The subscription offers pages had become functional but visually stale. I helped the team challenge how tightly marketing pages needed to conform to the product design system, and pushed for a bolder direction.

02 Launching a new premium proposition

Helping shape a new Economist proposition through an evolving strategy, a depleted design team and a large group of senior stakeholders.I started hands-on, then deliberately handed increasing ownership to a junior designer I managed. The work became an important part of the case for his subsequent promotion.

The thread through the work

I move between leading the work and making it.

01

Shape the problem

I work closely with Product rather than waiting for a brief, helping teams understand what we're solving and why.

02

Grow the team

I work closely with Product rather than waiting for a brief, helping teams understand what we're solving and why.

03

Stay close to craft

I work closely with Product rather than waiting for a brief, helping teams understand what we're solving and why.

a little about me

Designer, manager,occasional wingfoil instructor.

I've spent my career designing digital products around journalism, beginning as a visual designer at The Times before moving through The Telegraph and Financial Times to The Economist.

I care about the clarity and usefulness of a product, but also how it feels. Today I manage product designers, and still like being close to the work. Outside work, I'm a trained wingfoil instructor.

what people say

I have always trusted Luke to not only get the work done, but to appreciate context, invent solutions, and lift and guide those around him. He is also a delight to be around and have on any team!

Liz, CPO @ The Economist

Luke was a brilliant design manager, helping to build my confidence through our years working together at The Economist. He gave me the power to believe in myself, and my abilities as a Senior Product designer.

Lucinda, Senior Designer @ Moneybox

He has a brilliant ability to foster a great team culture, making sure everyone has a voice while also keeping everyone laughing. Working with Luke is always fun and I’d love to work with him again one day.

Camilla, Senior Designer @ Runna

I’ve worked with some not-so-good leads, some good leads and one or two who are just inspirational, who go out of their way to help you progress, balancing the business needs along with the team's. Luke is definitely the latter.

Nikhil, Senior Designer @ Haven
